Cosmetologist pay in Minnesota after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median cosmetologist in Minnesota earned $42,850 a year in May 2024, which is $21 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 5,230 cosmetologists the BLS counts in Minnesota earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $33,670 and $57,490. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Minnesota's tax, and Minnesota has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 9.85%.

What the median cosmetologist keeps in Minnesota

For a single filer on the median $42,850, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$42,850$3,571
Federal income tax-$3,158-$263
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$3,278-$273
Minnesota state income tax-$2,955-$246
Take-home$33,459$2,788

The state line is 6.9% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Minnesota ranks for cosmetologist pay

Of the 50 states, Minnesota ranks 10 of 50 on the gross median for cosmetologists, in the top ten. The highest-paying state is Washington at $58,920 and the lowest is Louisiana at $23,470. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

StateGross medianState taxTake-home
Minnesota$42,850$2,955$33,459
South Dakota$49,050$0$41,396
Iowa$37,850$1,438$30,958
Wisconsin$36,550$1,957$29,395
North Dakota$33,870$593$28,606

South Dakota leaves a cosmetologist with more at the end of the year than Minnesota does; South Dakota by about $7,937. Iowa, Wisconsin and North Dakota pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the cosmetologist jobs are in Minnesota

The BLS count of 5,230 cosmetologists is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester and Duluth, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($57,490 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Minnesota openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

Minnesota also has a program that pay people to move in: Harmony new-home rebate ($5,000 to $12,000, for anyone building a new home in the city of Harmony). Each has a residence condition and a funding round; the amount is the program's own "up to" figure.

What people get wrong about cosmetologist pay in Minnesota

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Minnesota is $22 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($21) is what the typical cosmetologist makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $42,850 offer in Minnesota is $33,459 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $36,414.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $40,850 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $45,850 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Minneapolis pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
