Designer in South Carolina: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

South Carolina does not license designers: no licence. This page says what a designer licensed or working in another state has to do to work in South Carolina, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Nothing is licensed for graphic, UX or UI design; architecture and interior design are licensed separately and are not this. A move to South Carolina changes your tax line and, for remote work, the employer's payroll registration.

What to have ready before you move

• Portfolio

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no South Carolina licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Assuming a remote employer can employ you in any state

Who hires designers in South Carolina

Designers in South Carolina are hired by agencies, product companies, in-house marketing teams. The metros with the most of that work are Charleston, Columbia, North Charleston and Greenville. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the South Carolina openings page.

For the money side: the median designer in South Carolina earned $56,180 a year ($27 an hour) in May 2024 across 1,990 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and South Carolina has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 6.2%. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.
