Forklift operator in Rhode Island: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Rhode Island does not license forklift operators: no state licence; OSHA requires employer-specific training and evaluation. This page says what a forklift operator licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Rhode Island, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

There is no forklift licence to transfer: OSHA requires the employer to train and evaluate each operator on its own equipment, so every new job in Rhode Island starts with a short certification regardless of your record. A prior certificate shortens the training and proves experience.

What to have ready before you move

• Prior forklift certification cards
• A list of equipment types (sit-down, reach, order picker)

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Rhode Island licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Paying for a 'national forklift licence' online; OSHA does not recognise one
