Forklift operator in Colorado: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Colorado does not license forklift operators: no state licence; OSHA requires employer-specific training and evaluation. This page says what a forklift operator licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Colorado, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

There is no forklift licence to transfer: OSHA requires the employer to train and evaluate each operator on its own equipment, so every new job in Colorado starts with a short certification regardless of your record. A prior certificate shortens the training and proves experience.

What to have ready before you move

• Prior forklift certification cards
• A list of equipment types (sit-down, reach, order picker)

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Colorado licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Paying for a 'national forklift licence' online; OSHA does not recognise one

Who hires forklift operators in Colorado

Forklift operators in Colorado are hired by warehouses, distribution centres, manufacturers and ports. The metros with the most of that work are Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora and Fort Collins. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Colorado openings page.

For the money side: the median forklift operator in Colorado earned $48,460 a year ($23 an hour) in May 2024 across 8,330 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Colorado has a flat 4.4% state income tax. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.
