Forklift operator in Illinois: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Illinois does not license forklift operators: no state licence; OSHA requires employer-specific training and evaluation. This page says what a forklift operator licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Illinois, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

There is no forklift licence to transfer: OSHA requires the employer to train and evaluate each operator on its own equipment, so every new job in Illinois starts with a short certification regardless of your record. A prior certificate shortens the training and proves experience.

What to have ready before you move

• Prior forklift certification cards
• A list of equipment types (sit-down, reach, order picker)

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Illinois licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Paying for a 'national forklift licence' online; OSHA does not recognise one

Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Illinois openings page.

For the money side: the median forklift operator in Illinois earned $47,090 a year ($23 an hour) in May 2024 across 28,510 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Illinois has a flat 4.95% state income tax. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.
