HVAC technician jobs in Massachusetts that help you relocate (2026)

HVAC technicians moving to Massachusetts are hired by HVAC contractors, mechanical contractors, facilities and property management, and manufacturers' service networks, and the metros with most of that work are Boston, Worcester, Springfield and Cambridge. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 7,960 HVAC technician jobs in Massachusetts at a median of $76,990 a year, which ranks 2 of 50 states on pay for the job. This page is about the employers that help you get there: who pays relocation in this trade, what the package contains, how to ask, and where in Massachusetts to look first.

Who pays relocation for HVAC technicians

Contractors in hot-climate states pay sign-on bonuses of $2,000 to $10,000 for experienced technicians, and the larger ones pay moving costs.

The strongest signal that an employer will pay to bring you in is that it has already filed with the Department of Labor because it could not hire locally. Those filings for Massachusetts are on the Massachusetts openings page; housing or transport is often part of the offer, and the employers in them hire Americans first.

What a relocation package actually contains

  • A lump sum, typically $1,000 to $5,000 at entry level and $5,000 to $20,000 for licensed and experienced hires; almost all of it is taxable income since 2018, so a $3,000 package is about $2,200 in your pocket.
  • Transport to the job: a flight or mileage, sometimes a moving truck for senior roles.
  • Temporary housing for two to six weeks, more often in resort, rural and project work.
  • A sign-on bonus paid after 90 days or split across the first year.
  • A clawback: stay less than six or twelve months and you repay all or part. It is normal and enforceable; read the schedule.

How to ask

Ask after the offer, not in the first interview, and ask in terms of the move: "I can start on the 15th if the move is covered; what does your relocation package include?" If there is no package, ask for a sign-on bonus paid on the first day instead; many employers have one and not the other. Get whatever is agreed into the offer letter. A verbal "we will sort you out" is the one that is forgotten when the hiring manager changes.

Before you accept an offer in Massachusetts

  • Check the employer exists and the job is real. Relocation scams target exactly the person who is about to move and has money set aside for a deposit. A real employer never asks you to pay for the background check, the uniform or "relocation processing".
  • Check the licence first. HVAC technician work in Massachusetts is licensed; the transfer page says what to do before you give notice.
  • Check what Massachusetts takes from your pay. Massachusetts has a flat 5% state income tax (plus 4% on income above about $1 million). Next door, New Hampshire has no state income tax on wages, Vermont has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 8.75%, New York has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 10.9%, Connecticut has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 6.99% and Rhode Island has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 5.99%.

Where in Massachusetts to look first

Boston, Worcester, Springfield and Cambridge carry most of the HVAC technician jobs and set the median; rural counties pay less on paper and often more in housing help. The employers worth the first calls are the ones with a stated relocation line in the posting, the ones in the Department of Labor filings, and for licensed trades the ones that offer to help with the licence paperwork; an employer that does that has done it before.
