How to transfer your HVAC technician licence to Virginia (2026)

HVAC technician work in Virginia is licensed at state level, by the Virginia HVAC or mechanical licensing body. This page says what a HVAC technician licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Virginia, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Your EPA 608 certificate is federal and carries over to Virginia as it is. State licensing is the variable: roughly half the states license HVAC technicians or contractors at state level, the rest license locally or not at all. Where Virginia licenses, apply with your current licence, certified hours and EPA card; where it does not, the EPA card and your record are what employers check.

Exam: EPA Section 608 for refrigerants, federal and permanent; NATE certificates are voluntary.

How long: two to six weeks where a state licence applies. Fee: $50 to $300; the current figure is on the licensing body's own site.

What to have ready before you move

  • EPA 608 card
  • Current state or local licence
  • Certified hours and employer letters
  • NATE or manufacturer certificates

Start the paperwork before you give notice. Every week the licence is not done is a week you are not paid, and nothing in the process needs you to be in Virginia already.

What people get wrong

  • Assuming the EPA card is a licence; it is a refrigerant handling certificate
  • Arriving in a licensing state without the hours documented

Who hires HVAC technicians in Virginia

HVAC technicians in Virginia are hired by HVAC contractors, mechanical contractors, facilities and property management, and manufacturers' service networks. The metros with the most of that work are Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Richmond and Arlington. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Virginia openings page.

For the money side: the median HVAC technician in Virginia earned $60,630 a year ($29 an hour) in May 2024 across 13,640 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Virginia has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 5.75%. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.
