LPN pay in Delaware after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median LPN in Delaware earned $66,090 a year in May 2024, which is $32 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 1,600 LPNs the BLS counts in Delaware earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $62,250 and $71,450. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Delaware's tax, and Delaware has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 6.6%.

What the median LPN keeps in Delaware

For a single filer on the median $66,090, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$66,090$5,508
Federal income tax-$6,381-$532
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$5,056-$421
Delaware state income tax-$3,053-$254
Take-home$51,600$4,300

The state line is 4.6% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Delaware ranks for LPN pay

Of the 50 states, Delaware ranks 15 of 50 on the gross median for LPNs. The highest-paying state is Washington at $79,700 and the lowest is Mississippi at $48,850. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

StateGross medianState taxTake-home
Delaware$66,090$3,053$51,600
Maryland$69,870$2,812$54,501
New Jersey$71,180$5,356$52,878
Pennsylvania$62,010$1,904$49,879

Maryland and New Jersey leave a LPN with more at the end of the year than Delaware does. Pennsylvania pays less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the LPN jobs are in Delaware

The BLS count of 1,600 LPNs is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Wilmington, Dover and Newark, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($71,450 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Delaware openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about LPN pay in Delaware

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Delaware is $32 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($32) is what the typical LPN makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $66,090 offer in Delaware is $51,600 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $54,653.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $64,090 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $69,090 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Wilmington pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
