Auto mechanic in Massachusetts: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Massachusetts does not license auto mechanics: no state licence for mechanics in most states; ASE certification is voluntary and widely required by employers. This page says what a auto mechanic licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Massachusetts, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Most states do not license automotive technicians; ASE certifications are national and transfer to Massachusetts unchanged. What is licensed in some states is the inspection work: emissions and safety inspector licences are state-specific and have to be obtained again. A few states (Michigan, Hawaii) license mechanics themselves.

What to have ready before you move

• ASE certificates and renewal dates
• Manufacturer training records
• Your own tools; most shops expect them

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Massachusetts licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Assuming an inspector licence transfers; it never does
• Letting ASE certifications lapse during the move

Who hires auto mechanics in Massachusetts

Auto mechanics in Massachusetts are hired by dealerships, independent shops, fleet operators and national chains. The metros with the most of that work are Boston, Worcester, Springfield and Cambridge. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Massachusetts openings page.

For the money side: the median auto mechanic in Massachusetts earned $57,470 a year ($28 an hour) in May 2024 across 12,390 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Massachusetts has a flat 5% state income tax. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.
