Customer service in Kentucky: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Kentucky does not license customer service representatives: no licence. This page says what a customer service representative licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Kentucky, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Nothing is licensed. Much customer service work is remote, which changes the question: a remote role pays by the employer's scale and taxes by the state you sit in, so moving to Kentucky changes the tax line and nothing else.

What to have ready before you move

• References
• Systems experience

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Kentucky licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Not telling a remote employer about the move; payroll must be registered in the new state

Who hires customer service representatives in Kentucky

Customer service representatives in Kentucky are hired by call centres, insurers, banks, utilities and e-commerce companies. The metros with the most of that work are Louisville, Lexington and Bowling Green. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Kentucky openings page.

For the money side: the median customer service representative in Kentucky earned $37,580 a year ($18 an hour) in May 2024 across 43,970 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Kentucky has a flat 4% state income tax. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.
