Delivery driver in South Dakota: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

South Dakota does not license delivery drivers: no licence beyond a standard driver's licence; a clean record and a DOT medical card for larger vehicles. This page says what a delivery driver licensed or working in another state has to do to work in South Dakota, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

No special licence transfers because none is needed: a standard South Dakota driver's licence, swapped within the residency window, is all a delivery job asks for. Vehicles over 10,000 pounds need a DOT medical card, which is federal and carries over.

What to have ready before you move

• Driving record
• DOT medical card if you have one

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no South Dakota licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Missing the licence swap window
• Assuming pay structures are the same; per-package, hourly and route-contractor pay differ widely

Who hires delivery drivers in South Dakota

Delivery drivers in South Dakota are hired by parcel carriers and their contractors, food distributors, retailers and courier companies. The metros with the most of that work are Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Aberdeen. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the South Dakota openings page.

For the money side: the median delivery driver in South Dakota earned $44,090 a year ($21 an hour) in May 2024 across 4,380 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and South Dakota has no state income tax on wages. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.
