Diesel mechanic in Oregon: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Oregon does not license diesel mechanics: no state licence; ASE truck certifications and manufacturer training are what employers check. This page says what a diesel mechanic licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Oregon, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

No state licenses diesel mechanics. ASE medium and heavy truck certifications are national and carry over to Oregon; DOT inspector certification (for annual inspections) is federal and also carries over. Nothing is filed with the state.

What to have ready before you move

• ASE T-series certificates
• DOT inspector qualification records
• Manufacturer training (Cummins, Detroit, PACCAR)
• Your tools

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Oregon licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Assuming shop pay scales are similar; fleet, dealer and independent shops pay very differently
