Dispatcher in New York: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

New York does not license dispatchers: no licence for freight dispatchers; public safety dispatchers are certified by the state. This page says what a dispatcher licensed or working in another state has to do to work in New York, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Freight and fleet dispatchers are not licensed. Public safety (911) dispatchers are certified by the state or the agency, with a training academy and a background check, and that certification rarely transfers: expect to complete New York's program on hire.

What to have ready before you move

• TMS or CAD system experience listed
• Public safety: your state certification and training record

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no New York licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Assuming a 911 certification transfers; most states retrain
