Hotel staff pay in Utah after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median hotel worker in Utah earned $34,270 a year in May 2024, which is $16 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 3,540 hotel workers the BLS counts in Utah earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $29,940 and $36,130. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Utah's tax, and Utah has a flat 4.5% state income tax.

What the median hotel worker keeps in Utah

For a single filer on the median $34,270, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$34,270$2,856
Federal income tax-$2,128-$177
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$2,622-$219
Utah state income tax-$1,542-$129
Take-home$27,978$2,332

The state line is 4.5% of gross at this salary. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Utah ranks for hotel worker pay

Of the 50 states, Utah ranks 22 of 50 on the gross median for hotel workers. The highest-paying state is Hawaii at $58,740 and the lowest is West Virginia at $26,590. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Utah$34,270$1,542$27,978
Nevada$37,960$0$32,485
Arizona$35,570$889$29,676
Colorado$36,370$1,600$29,608
Idaho$34,100$1,807$27,576
Wyoming$30,800$0$26,732
New Mexico$28,770$1,188$23,913

Nevada, Arizona and Colorado leave a hotel worker with more at the end of the year than Utah does; Nevada by about $4,507. Idaho, Wyoming and New Mexico pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the hotel worker jobs are in Utah

The BLS count of 3,540 hotel workers is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Provo and St. George, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($36,130 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Utah openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about hotel worker pay in Utah

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Utah is $16 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($16) is what the typical hotel worker makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $34,270 offer in Utah is $27,978 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $29,520.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $32,270 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $37,270 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Salt Lake City pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
