How to transfer your Nail technician licence to Massachusetts (2026)

Nail technician work in Massachusetts is licensed at state level, by the Massachusetts Board of Cosmetology. This page says what a nail technician licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Massachusetts, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Every state except Connecticut licenses nail technicians, with hours from about 100 to 600. Reciprocity to Massachusetts depends on your hours meeting its minimum and a clean record; the law and rules exam is usually required.

Exam: NIC nail technology exams in most states.

How long: two to six weeks. Fee: $25 to $150; the current figure is on the licensing body's own site.

What to have ready before you move

• Licence verification
• Hours transcript

Start the paperwork before you give notice. Every week the licence is not done is a week you are not paid, and nothing in the process needs you to be in Massachusetts already.

What people get wrong

• Falling short on hours; the gap can be made up with experience in some states
