Moving between states / Minnesota
Moving from Idaho to Minnesota as a CDL holder
What a CDL holder licensed in Idaho has to do to work in Minnesota, what the move does to your pay, and who in Minnesota is hiring from out of state.
Transfers at the DMV. A commercial driver's licence transfers like any licence: within 30 days of becoming a Minnesota resident you surrender the Idaho CDL at a Minnesota driver licence office, pass the vision test, pay the fee, and your endorsements carry over. A hazmat endorsement needs a fresh TSA threat assessment in Minnesota. Your driving record follows you through the federal CDLIS system.
What the move does to your paycheck
On a $60,000 salary Minnesota takes roughly $957 a year more than Idaho does.
| Salary | Idaho state tax | Minnesota state tax | Difference a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $2,120 | $2,758 | -$638 |
| $60,000 | $3,180 | $4,137 | -$957 |
| $90,000 | $4,770 | $6,206 | -$1,436 |
Rough figures for a single filer: exact in the flat-rate and no-tax states, approximated at 70% of the top bracket in the progressive ones. Property and sales tax are not in it.
CNA: Idaho to Minnesota
Transfers by reciprocity. Your Idaho certificate stays on the Idaho Nurse Aide Registry (administered by Prometric for the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare); to work in Minnesota you apply to the Minnesota Department of Health, Nursing Assistant Registry for reciprocity. It accepts an active certificate in good standing from another state; there is no retest if your record is clean. Most registries list you within two to six weeks.
RN and LPN: Idaho to Minnesota
Endorsement needed. Minnesota is not in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so your Idaho multistate licence does not work there. Apply to the Minnesota Board of Nursing for licensure by endorsement before you move; it commonly takes six to twelve weeks. Your Idaho licence stays valid for compact states.
Electrician: Idaho to Minnesota
Reciprocity likely. Minnesota licenses electricians at state level through the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, and reciprocity with a group of states for journeymen licensed by exam who worked a year in the trade. Your Idaho licence comes from the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, Electrical Board, a state body, which is what a reciprocity application needs: ask it for a verification letter before you move.
