Moving between states / Georgia
Moving from New Jersey to Georgia as a CDL holder
What a CDL holder licensed in New Jersey has to do to work in Georgia, what the move does to your pay, and who in Georgia is hiring from out of state.
Transfers at the DMV. A commercial driver's licence transfers like any licence: within 30 days of becoming a Georgia resident you surrender the New Jersey CDL at a Georgia driver licence office, pass the vision test, pay the fee, and your endorsements carry over. A hazmat endorsement needs a fresh TSA threat assessment in Georgia. Your driving record follows you through the federal CDLIS system.
What the move does to your paycheck
On a $60,000 salary Georgia leaves you roughly $1,401 a year more than New Jersey does, because Georgia's rate is lower.
| Salary | New Jersey state tax | Georgia state tax | Difference a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $3,010 | $2,076 | +$934 |
| $60,000 | $4,515 | $3,114 | +$1,401 |
| $90,000 | $6,773 | $4,671 | +$2,102 |
Rough figures for a single filer: exact in the flat-rate and no-tax states, approximated at 70% of the top bracket in the progressive ones. Property and sales tax are not in it.
CNA: New Jersey to Georgia
Transfers by reciprocity. Your New Jersey certificate stays on the New Jersey Department of Health, Nurse Aide Registry; to work in Georgia you apply to the Georgia Nurse Aide Registry (Georgia Department of Community Health, administered by Credentia) for reciprocity. It accepts an active certificate in good standing from another state; there is no retest if your record is clean. Most registries list you within two to six weeks.
RN and LPN: New Jersey to Georgia
Works on day one. Both New Jersey and Georgia are in the Nurse Licensure Compact. A multistate RN or LPN licence from New Jersey is valid in Georgia the day you arrive. Once Georgia is your primary residence, apply there for a Georgia multistate licence; most boards allow 30 to 60 days.
Electrician: New Jersey to Georgia
Exam required. Georgia licenses electricians through the Georgia State Construction Industry Licensing Board, Division of Electrical Contractors and does not reciprocate with any state. Your New Jersey hours count toward eligibility, so get them certified in writing by the New Jersey Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors before you move and book the Georgia exam early.
Does Georgia pay you to come?
No statewide program in Georgia pays people to move in. Towns sometimes list an offer through MakeMyMove, and employers in short-staffed trades pay relocation themselves; ask for it in writing before you accept.
