Moving from Ohio to Oregon as a CDL holder
What a CDL holder licensed in Ohio has to do to work in Oregon, what the move does to your pay, and who in Oregon is hiring from out of state.
Transfers at the DMV. A commercial driver's licence transfers like any licence: within 30 days of becoming a Oregon resident you surrender the Ohio CDL at a Oregon driver licence office, pass the vision test, pay the fee, and your endorsements carry over. A hazmat endorsement needs a fresh TSA threat assessment in Oregon. Your driving record follows you through the federal CDLIS system.
What the move does to your paycheck
On a $60,000 salary Oregon takes roughly $2,688 a year more than Ohio does.
| Salary | Ohio state tax | Oregon state tax | Difference a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $980 | $2,772 | -$1,792 |
| $60,000 | $1,470 | $4,158 | -$2,688 |
| $90,000 | $2,205 | $6,237 | -$4,032 |
Rough figures for a single filer: exact in the flat-rate and no-tax states, approximated at 70% of the top bracket in the progressive ones. In Oregon: Portland metro adds local taxes on higher incomes. In Ohio: most cities add a 1 to 2.5% municipal income tax. Property and sales tax are not in it.
CNA: Ohio to Oregon
Transfers by reciprocity. Your Ohio certificate stays on the Ohio Department of Health, Nurse Aide Registry; to work in Oregon you apply to the Oregon State Board of Nursing, Certified Nursing Assistant registry for reciprocity. It accepts an active certificate in good standing from another state; there is no retest if your record is clean. Most registries list you within two to six weeks.
RN and LPN: Ohio to Oregon
Endorsement needed. Oregon is not in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so your Ohio multistate licence does not work there. Apply to the Oregon Board of Nursing for licensure by endorsement before you move; it commonly takes six to twelve weeks. Your Ohio licence stays valid for compact states.
Electrician: Ohio to Oregon
Exam likely. Oregon licenses at state level through the Oregon Building Codes Division, Electrical and Elevator Board and reciprocates with other state boards, but Ohio licenses locally through the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (contractors) and city building departments, which is not a party to those agreements. Expect to document your hours and sit the Oregon journeyman exam.
Does Oregon pay you to come?
No statewide program in Oregon pays people to move in. Towns sometimes list an offer through MakeMyMove, and employers in short-staffed trades pay relocation themselves; ask for it in writing before you accept.
Going the other way? Ohio has Hamilton Talent Attraction Program. See moving from Oregon to Ohio.
