Moving between states / Nevada
Moving from Oregon to Nevada for work
What moves with you from Oregon to Nevada: your licence, your take-home pay, and the programs that pay people to come. Every line below is computed from the two states' rules.
What the move does to your paycheck
On a $60,000 salary Nevada leaves you roughly $4,158 a year more than Oregon does, because Nevada has no state income tax on wages.
| Salary | Oregon state tax | Nevada state tax | Difference a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $2,772 | $0 | +$2,772 |
| $60,000 | $4,158 | $0 | +$4,158 |
| $90,000 | $6,237 | $0 | +$6,237 |
Rough figures for a single filer: exact in the flat-rate and no-tax states, approximated at 70% of the top bracket in the progressive ones. In Oregon: Portland metro adds local taxes on higher incomes. Property and sales tax are not in it.
CNA: Oregon to Nevada
Transfers by reciprocity. Your Oregon certificate stays on the Oregon State Board of Nursing, Certified Nursing Assistant registry; to work in Nevada you apply to the Nevada State Board of Nursing, Certified Nursing Assistant program for reciprocity. It accepts an active certificate in good standing from another state; there is no retest if your record is clean. Most registries list you within two to six weeks.
RN and LPN: Oregon to Nevada
Endorsement needed. Neither Oregon nor Nevada is in the Nurse Licensure Compact. You apply to the Nevada Board of Nursing for licensure by endorsement: verification of your Oregon licence through Nursys, a fingerprint background check and the fee. Start before you give notice; six to twelve weeks is normal.
Electrician: Oregon to Nevada
Licensed by the city. Nevada has no state electrician licence; the Nevada State Contractors Board decide what card you need, and it can differ between cities. Contractor licences are state-issued; journeyman cards are county-issued in Clark and Washoe counties where required. Ask the contractor hiring you which municipality the first job is in and apply to that one. Your Oregon state licence is evidence of hours, not a licence there.
CDL: Oregon to Nevada
Transfers at the DMV. A commercial driver's licence transfers like any licence: within 30 days of becoming a Nevada resident you surrender the Oregon CDL at a Nevada driver licence office, pass the vision test, pay the fee, and your endorsements carry over. A hazmat endorsement needs a fresh TSA threat assessment in Nevada. Your driving record follows you through the federal CDLIS system.
Does Nevada pay you to come?
No statewide program in Nevada pays people to move in. Towns sometimes list an offer through MakeMyMove, and employers in short-staffed trades pay relocation themselves; ask for it in writing before you accept.
