Moving between states / New York
Moving from Texas to New York as a certified nursing assistant
What a certified nursing assistant licensed in Texas has to do to work in New York, what the move does to your pay, and who in New York is hiring from out of state.
Transfers by reciprocity. Your Texas certificate stays on the Texas Health and Human Services, Nurse Aide Registry; to work in New York you apply to the New York State Nurse Aide Registry (administered by Prometric for the Department of Health) for reciprocity. Reciprocity needs an active certificate and paid nurse aide work within the last two years. Most registries list you within two to six weeks.
What the move does to your paycheck
On a $60,000 salary New York takes roughly $4,578 a year more than Texas does, because you are leaving a state with no income tax on wages.
| Salary | Texas state tax | New York state tax | Difference a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $0 | $3,052 | -$3,052 |
| $60,000 | $0 | $4,578 | -$4,578 |
| $90,000 | $0 | $6,867 | -$6,867 |
Rough figures for a single filer: exact in the flat-rate and no-tax states, approximated at 70% of the top bracket in the progressive ones. In New York: New York City adds up to 3.876%. Property and sales tax are not in it.
RN and LPN: Texas to New York
Endorsement needed. New York is not in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so your Texas multistate licence does not work there. Apply to the New York Board of Nursing for licensure by endorsement before you move; it commonly takes six to twelve weeks. Your Texas licence stays valid for compact states.
Electrician: Texas to New York
Licensed by the city. New York has no state electrician licence; the City and county building departments decide what card you need, and it can differ between cities. No state electrician licence; New York City, Buffalo, Rochester and most counties license their own and do not reciprocate. Ask the contractor hiring you which municipality the first job is in and apply to that one. Your Texas state licence is evidence of hours, not a licence there.
CDL: Texas to New York
Transfers at the DMV. A commercial driver's licence transfers like any licence: within 30 days of becoming a New York resident you surrender the Texas CDL at a New York driver licence office, pass the vision test, pay the fee, and your endorsements carry over. A hazmat endorsement needs a fresh TSA threat assessment in New York. Your driving record follows you through the federal CDLIS system.
Does New York pay you to come?
No statewide program in New York pays people to move in. Towns sometimes list an offer through MakeMyMove, and employers in short-staffed trades pay relocation themselves; ask for it in writing before you accept.
