Moving from Vermont to New York as a CDL holder

What a CDL holder licensed in Vermont has to do to work in New York, what the move does to your pay, and who in New York is hiring from out of state.

Transfers at the DMV. A commercial driver's licence transfers like any licence: within 30 days of becoming a New York resident you surrender the Vermont CDL at a New York driver licence office, pass the vision test, pay the fee, and your endorsements carry over. A hazmat endorsement needs a fresh TSA threat assessment in New York. Your driving record follows you through the federal CDLIS system.

What the move does to your paycheck

On a $60,000 salary New York takes roughly $903 a year more than Vermont does.

$60,000$3,675$4,578-$903
$90,000$5,513$6,867-$1,354

Rough figures for a single filer: exact in the flat-rate and no-tax states, approximated at 70% of the top bracket in the progressive ones. In New York: New York City adds up to 3.876%. Property and sales tax are not in it.

CNA: Vermont to New York

Transfers by reciprocity. Your Vermont certificate stays on the Vermont Board of Nursing (Licensed Nursing Assistant); to work in New York you apply to the New York State Nurse Aide Registry (administered by Prometric for the Department of Health) for reciprocity. Reciprocity needs an active certificate and paid nurse aide work within the last two years. Most registries list you within two to six weeks.

RN and LPN: Vermont to New York

Endorsement needed. New York is not in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so your Vermont multistate licence does not work there. Apply to the New York Board of Nursing for licensure by endorsement before you move; it commonly takes six to twelve weeks. Your Vermont licence stays valid for compact states.

Electrician: Vermont to New York

Licensed by the city. New York has no state electrician licence; the City and county building departments decide what card you need, and it can differ between cities. No state electrician licence; New York City, Buffalo, Rochester and most counties license their own and do not reciprocate. Ask the contractor hiring you which municipality the first job is in and apply to that one. Your Vermont state licence is evidence of hours, not a licence there.

No statewide program in New York pays people to move in. Towns sometimes list an offer through MakeMyMove, and employers in short-staffed trades pay relocation themselves; ask for it in writing before you accept.
