What the work involves

Due to drought conditions, harvested crops have been salvaged for feed quality so that value can be recovered from an otherwise nearly worthless crop, and feeder cattle are purchased in December and grown on that feed product until they are sold in March so the regular workings of the crop operation are not interrupted. In carrying out the livestock work, employees under SOC 45-2093 spend 80% of their time preparing feed mixtures and distributing feed to the cattle, checking drinking-water supplies and cleaning troughs, tanks, and watering equipment, observing animals for illness, injury, distress, or changes in feeding behavior, counting, weighing, identifying, and sorting animals into designated groups, moving animals between pastures, pens, barns, and handling areas, assisting with breeding activities and pregnancy checks as directed, monitoring animals during birthing and assisting with newborn care, separating animals requiring treatment or additional observation, loading and unloading animals for movement or sale, cleaning pens, stalls, barns, chutes, and animal-handling areas, repairing fences, gates, livestock enclosures, and watering systems, operating feeding equipment, tractors, loaders, or farm vehicles used in animal care, and maintaining records of animal identification, births, treatments, and movements. The remaining 20% of work under SOC 49-3041 is devoted to keeping the farm equipment needed for these livestock and crop-support activities in working order by inspecting agricultural machinery to identify faults, wear, and maintenance needs, diagnosing mechanical or electrical problems and determining required repairs, servicing tractors, harvesters, irrigation equipment, and other specified farm machinery, taking apart damaged assemblies to reach components requiring repair, repairing or replacing defective engines, motors, and related components, inspecting and replacing worn belts, drives, filters, and other service parts, testing electrical circuits and repairing or replacing wiring and components, repairing piping, connections, or mechanical components on irrigation equipment, cleaning components and lubricating moving parts, checking fluid levels and performing scheduled preventive maintenance, reassembling machinery after repairs and verifying correct operation, and aligning, adjusting, and testing equipment to restore proper performance. The employer, at its sole discretion, may grant pay increases based on factors such as performance, longevity, and/or experience. Employer may also, at its sole discretion, offer performance-based incentive bonuses that are not guaranteed and are determined by the employer. Job requires exposure to extreme outdoor temperatures and lifting up to 50 lbs. Must possess a valid, standard, non-commercial driver's license (e.g., Class C, D, R, E, F or 3 depending on state). Employer will conduct post-hire criminal background checks at no cost to the employee and will not employ anyone with a felony/theft criminal background as required by the workplace safety policy and company HR hiring practices as allowed by law.
