What the work involves

Employees in SOC 45-2093 will perform the full range of hatchery production work for chickens, beginning with receiving eggs, placing them on trays, loading trays into incubators, and transferring eggs from incubators to hatchers so the hatch process can proceed in sequence; once chicks hatch, they will load chicks into the separator and examine chick genitalia, feathers, and/or colors to determine sex, including picking up chicks, squeezing chicks so that feces are extracted, shining light or turning back the cloacal opening to view and observe the sex of the chick, and then segregating chicks according to sex, while also examining feathers and colors of chicks to make the same separation. They will assist throughout the hatchery and at farms and shipping locations by performing toe/wing/beak clipping, vaccinating, receiving, loading, and unloading eggs and chicks, filling customer chick orders, packaging those orders, and preparing chicks for shipment to customers. Work also includes driving to farms and shipping locations using vans, loading and unloading eggs and chicks at those locations, dumping product waste, cleaning and sanitizing the facility and equipment, and performing all other duties as assigned. The employer, at its sole discretion, may grant pay increases based on factors such as performance, longevity, and/or experience. Workers returning for a consecutive season will be paid at the previous season’s rate if that rate exceeds the current published rate.
