Carpenter pay in Virginia after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median carpenter in Virginia earned $50,220 a year in May 2024, which is $24 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 18,340 carpenters the BLS counts in Virginia earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $44,810 and $60,450. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Virginia's tax, and Virginia has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 5.75%.

What the median carpenter keeps in Virginia

For a single filer on the median $50,220, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$50,220$4,185
Federal income tax-$4,042-$337
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$3,842-$320
Virginia state income tax-$2,021-$168
Take-home$40,315$3,360

The state line is 4.0% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Virginia ranks for carpenter pay

Of the 50 states, Virginia ranks 36 of 50 on the gross median for carpenters. The highest-paying state is Hawaii at $85,970 and the lowest is Mississippi at $46,160. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Tennessee$49,520$0$41,774

West Virginia$47,320$1,597$38,409
North Carolina$47,630$2,024$38,230

Maryland, Tennessee and Kentucky leave a carpenter with more at the end of the year than Virginia does; Maryland by about $7,563. West Virginia and North Carolina pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the carpenter jobs are in Virginia

The BLS count of 18,340 carpenters is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Richmond and Arlington, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($60,450 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Virginia openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about carpenter pay in Virginia

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Virginia is $26 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($24) is what the typical carpenter makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $50,220 offer in Virginia is $40,315 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $42,336.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $48,220 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $53,220 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Virginia Beach pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
