Concrete and Cement Work Jobs in the U.S. for Foreign Workers (2026)

the Usthe Us

Concrete is the one construction material with a clock on it. Once the truck starts pouring, the crew works until the slab is finished - no breaks that matter, no tomorrow. That urgency shapes the whole trade: concrete crews are tight, skill is visible in every finished surface, and good finishers are treated like gold because a bad one costs the company a tear-out. For foreign workers with concrete experience, this is a trade where competence speaks for itself.

The roles on a concrete crew

  • Laborer / form setter - building and stripping forms, placing rebar, moving concrete; the entry role, typically around $16-$22 per hour.
  • Finisher - screeding, floating, troweling and edging to specification; the skill position, commonly roughly $20-$30 per hour, with structural and decorative specialists higher.
  • Flatwork specialists - driveways, slabs, sidewalks; the volume market in residential construction.
  • Structural and commercial - foundations, tilt-wall panels, high-rise decks; union crews in major cities can earn well above the ranges here.
  • Decorative concrete - stamped, stained and polished floors; a premium niche with strong margins.

Overtime is a way of life - big pours start before dawn and end when the concrete says so.

Certifications that raise pay

  • ACI Flatwork Finisher certification (American Concrete Institute) - the recognized credential many commercial and public projects specify; experienced foreign finishers can test for it after arrival.
  • OSHA 10/30 - expected on commercial sites.
  • Formwork and shoring training, and rigging/signal certs for structural work.
  • A driver's licence matters more than in most trades - crews chase pours across a metro area daily.

Where the work is

Everywhere something is built, but the volume is in the Sun Belt building booms: Texas, Florida, Arizona, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee and Utah. Data-center and factory construction has added huge industrial slab demand in places like Ohio, Indiana and rural Virginia. In northern states, exterior concrete is seasonal - roughly April to November - which matters for visas, below.

Visa routes: the honest assessment

Northern seasonality gives concrete one of construction's few real H-2B stories: flatwork and paving contractors in cold-winter states have used seasonal certification to bring crews in for the pour season at certified wages. Caps are tight and employer demand for visa numbers exceeds supply - the mechanics are in our H-2B explainer. In the year-round South, the formal route is EB-3 sponsorship: finishers with documented multi-year experience fit the skilled category, and the concrete labor shortage is real enough that sponsorship happens - but expect a process measured in years, with the employer bearing the key costs. If anyone asks you to pay thousands for a "concrete job with visa included," that is a scam, full stop. Nobody legitimate charges workers for a job offer.

Practical realities

  • The work is among construction's hardest: heat, wet concrete burns (wear proper boots and gloves), and decades of knee and back load. Take protective habits seriously from day one.
  • Piece-rate flatwork exists (per square foot); as with drywall, clarify exactly what the rate covers.
  • Photograph your finishes - broom texture, hard trowel, stamped work - and note slab specs you have worked to; it is your portfolio.

Reading a concrete job offer

Concrete employers range from two-truck driveway outfits to national structural contractors, and the offer details tell you which you are dealing with. Ask about rain-day policy (unpaid standby is common in flatwork), start times (structural pours often begin at 4-5 a.m. in summer heat), travel radius and whether the company pays drive time between sites. Union versus non-union matters more in this trade than most: union cement mason locals in cities like Chicago and New York bring apprenticeship training, defined wage scales and benefits, while the non-union Sun Belt market trades that for faster entry and piece-rate upside. Equipment skill is a quiet pay lever - laser screeds, ride-on trowels and pump experience all command premiums over hand-tool work. Finally, ask who supplies boots and gloves; concrete burns from wet cement are entirely preventable, and an employer casual about them is telling you something.
