Medical coder pay in California after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median medical coder in California earned $59,700 a year in May 2024, which is $29 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 19,750 medical coders the BLS counts in California earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $47,280 and $79,970. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on California's tax, and California has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 13.3%.

What the median medical coder keeps in California

For a single filer on the median $59,700, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$59,700$4,975
Federal income tax-$5,180-$432
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$4,567-$381
California state income tax-$5,558-$463
Take-home$44,395$3,700

The state line is 9.3% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Plus a 1.1% payroll tax for disability insurance, which is not in the table. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where California ranks for medical coder pay

Of the 50 states, California ranks 6 of 50 on the gross median for medical coders, in the top ten. The highest-paying state is Rhode Island at $63,330 and the lowest is Alabama at $38,540. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

The same job in the states next to California, gross median and estimated take-home for a single filer:

StateGross medianState taxTake-home
California$59,700$5,558$44,395
Nevada$60,530$0$50,619
Oregon$57,260$3,968$44,025
Arizona$49,790$1,245$40,745

Nevada leaves a medical coder with more at the end of the year than California does; Nevada by about $6,224. Oregon and Arizona pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the medical coder jobs are in California

The BLS count of 19,750 medical coders is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco and Sacramento, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($79,970 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the California openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about medical coder pay in California

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for California is $33 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($29) is what the typical medical coder makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $59,700 offer in California is $44,395 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $49,953.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $57,700 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $62,700 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Los Angeles pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
