Millwright in Missouri: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Missouri does not license millwrights: no state licence; employers and union locals check certifications and experience. This page says what a millwright licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Missouri, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

No state licenses millwrights or industrial maintenance mechanics. Union millwrights transfer between locals; non-union mechanics transfer their certifications (welding, rigging, electrical safety, PLC training) and their record. Nothing has to be filed in Missouri.

What to have ready before you move

• Union card if applicable
• Certifications: welding, rigging, forklift, confined space
• A list of equipment and control systems you have worked on

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Missouri licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Underestimating how specific plants are; a mill millwright and a food plant mechanic are hired differently

Who hires millwrights in Missouri

Millwrights in Missouri are hired by manufacturers, food processors, mills, power plants, logistics centres and industrial contractors. The metros with the most of that work are Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield and Columbia. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Missouri openings page.

For the money side: the median millwright in Missouri earned $61,270 a year ($29 an hour) in May 2024 across 4,450 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Missouri has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 4.7%. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.
