Firefighter pay in Georgia after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median firefighter in Georgia earned $45,970 a year in May 2024, which is $22 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 11,660 firefighters the BLS counts in Georgia earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $37,360 and $54,380. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Georgia's tax, and Georgia has a flat 5.19% state income tax.

What the median firefighter keeps in Georgia

For a single filer on the median $45,970, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$45,970$3,831
Federal income tax-$3,532-$294
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$3,517-$293
Georgia state income tax-$2,386-$199
Take-home$36,535$3,045

The state line is 5.2% of gross at this salary. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Georgia ranks for firefighter pay

Of the 50 states, Georgia ranks 39 of 50 on the gross median for firefighters. The highest-paying state is Washington at $93,490 and the lowest is Louisiana at $33,700. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

StateGross medianState taxTake-home
Georgia$45,970$2,386$36,535
Florida$58,360$0$48,876
Tennessee$47,300$0$39,990
Alabama$47,490$1,662$38,480
South Carolina$45,960$1,995$36,918
North Carolina$37,250$1,583$30,331

Florida, Tennessee, Alabama and South Carolina leave a firefighter with more at the end of the year than Georgia does; Florida by about $12,341. North Carolina pays less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the firefighter jobs are in Georgia

The BLS count of 11,660 firefighters is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus and Savannah, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($54,380 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Georgia openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about firefighter pay in Georgia

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Georgia is $23 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($22) is what the typical firefighter makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $45,970 offer in Georgia is $36,535 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $38,921.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $43,970 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $48,970 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Atlanta pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
