Insurance agent pay in Oklahoma after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median insurance agent in Oklahoma earned $45,550 a year in May 2024, which is $22 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 5,310 insurance agents the BLS counts in Oklahoma earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $37,580 and $72,800. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Oklahoma's tax, and Oklahoma has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 4.75%.

What the median insurance agent keeps in Oklahoma

For a single filer on the median $45,550, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$45,550$3,796
Federal income tax-$3,482-$290
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$3,485-$290
Oklahoma state income tax-$1,515-$126
Take-home$37,068$3,089

The state line is 3.3% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Oklahoma ranks for insurance agent pay

Of the 50 states, Oklahoma ranks 48 of 50 on the gross median for insurance agents, in the bottom ten. The highest-paying state is Minnesota at $78,650 and the lowest is West Virginia at $44,080. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Oklahoma$45,550$1,515$37,068
Kansas$60,920$2,380$48,554
Colorado$61,020$2,685$48,329
Missouri$59,680$1,963$47,973
Arkansas$51,280$1,400$41,787
Texas$47,530$0$40,174
New Mexico$46,990$1,941$37,799

Kansas, Colorado, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas and New Mexico leave an insurance agent with more at the end of the year than Oklahoma does; Kansas by about $11,486. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the insurance agent jobs are in Oklahoma

The BLS count of 5,310 insurance agents is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Norman and Broken Arrow, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($72,800 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Oklahoma openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

Oklahoma also has a program that pay people to move in: Tulsa Remote ($10,000, for full-time remote workers who move to Tulsa for at least a year; the longest-running program of its kind). Each has a residence condition and a funding round; the amount is the program's own "up to" figure.

What people get wrong about insurance agent pay in Oklahoma

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Oklahoma is $30 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($22) is what the typical insurance agent makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $45,550 offer in Oklahoma is $37,068 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $38,583.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $43,550 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $48,550 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Oklahoma City pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
