Manager pay in New York after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median manager in New York earned $129,990 a year in May 2024, which is $63 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 210,890 managers the BLS counts in New York earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $81,910 and $208,600. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on New York's tax, and New York has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 10.9%.

What the median manager keeps in New York

For a single filer on the median $129,990, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$129,990$10,833
Federal income tax-$20,736-$1,728
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$9,944-$829
New York state income tax-$9,918-$827
Take-home$89,392$7,449

The state line is 7.6% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. New York City adds up to 3.876%, which is not in the table. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where New York ranks for manager pay

Of the 50 states, New York ranks 7 of 50 on the gross median for managers, in the top ten. The highest-paying state is New Jersey at $149,990 and the lowest is Arkansas at $64,260. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

New York$129,990$9,918$89,392
New Jersey$149,990$11,287$101,693
Connecticut$130,230$6,372$93,101
Massachusetts$123,850$6,193$88,919
Pennsylvania$100,400$3,082$75,708
Vermont$93,290$5,714$68,074

New Jersey and Connecticut leave a manager with more at the end of the year than New York does; New Jersey by about $12,301. Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Vermont pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the manager jobs are in New York

The BLS count of 210,890 managers is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, Syracuse and Albany, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($208,600 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the New York openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about manager pay in New York

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for New York is $82 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($63) is what the typical manager makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $129,990 offer in New York is $89,392 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $99,310.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $127,990 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $132,990 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. New York City pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
