Millwright in Minnesota: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Minnesota does not license millwrights: no state licence; employers and union locals check certifications and experience. This page says what a millwright licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Minnesota, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

No state licenses millwrights or industrial maintenance mechanics. Union millwrights transfer between locals; non-union mechanics transfer their certifications (welding, rigging, electrical safety, PLC training) and their record. Nothing has to be filed in Minnesota.

What to have ready before you move

  • Union card if applicable
  • Certifications: welding, rigging, forklift, confined space
  • A list of equipment and control systems you have worked on

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Minnesota licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

  • Underestimating how specific plants are; a mill millwright and a food plant mechanic are hired differently

Who hires millwrights in Minnesota

Millwrights in Minnesota are hired by manufacturers, food processors, mills, power plants, logistics centres and industrial contractors. The metros with the most of that work are Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester and Duluth. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Minnesota openings page.

For the money side: the median millwright in Minnesota earned $68,160 a year ($33 an hour) in May 2024 across 6,650 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Minnesota has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 9.85%. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.

Minnesota also has a program that pay people to move in: Harmony new-home rebate ($5,000 to $12,000, for anyone building a new home in the city of Harmony). Each has a residence condition and a funding round.

Everything about Minnesota, on one page

The Minnesota page has the registries and boards, the income tax table, the programs that pay you to come and the openings filed this month. If you know which state you are leaving, the move pages compare the two directly.
