Occupational therapist pay in Alabama after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median occupational therapist in Alabama earned $95,410 a year in May 2024, which is $46 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 1,390 occupational therapists the BLS counts in Alabama earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $80,250 and $108,110. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Alabama's tax, and Alabama has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 5%.

What the median occupational therapist keeps in Alabama

For a single filer on the median $95,410, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$95,410$7,951
Federal income tax-$12,831-$1,069
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$7,299-$608
Alabama state income tax-$3,339-$278
Take-home$71,941$5,995

The state line is 3.5% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Alabama ranks for occupational therapist pay

Of the 50 states, Alabama ranks 26 of 50 on the gross median for occupational therapists. The highest-paying state is California at $119,470 and the lowest is North Dakota at $79,910. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Alabama$95,410$3,339$71,941
Florida$99,070$0$77,855
Tennessee$96,030$0$75,716
Georgia$98,690$5,122$72,465
Mississippi$92,330$4,063$69,050

Florida, Tennessee and Georgia leave an occupational therapist with more at the end of the year than Alabama does; Florida by about $5,914. Mississippi pays less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the occupational therapist jobs are in Alabama

The BLS count of 1,390 occupational therapists is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery and Mobile, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($108,110 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Alabama openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

Alabama also has a program that pay people to move in: Remote Shoals (up to $10,000, for remote workers moving to the Shoals area (Florence, Muscle Shoals)). Each has a residence condition and a funding round; the amount is the program's own "up to" figure.

What people get wrong about occupational therapist pay in Alabama

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Alabama is $46 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($46) is what the typical occupational therapist makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $95,410 offer in Alabama is $71,941 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $75,280.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $93,410 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $98,410 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Birmingham pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
