How to transfer your Physical therapist licence to Vermont (2026)

Physical therapist work in Vermont is licensed at state level, by the Vermont Board of Physical Therapy. This page says what a physical therapist licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Vermont, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Every state licenses physical therapists. The PT Compact lets a therapist with a licence in a member state buy a compact privilege to practise in another member state in days, without a second licence; outside the compact you apply to Vermont's board for licensure by endorsement with NPTE scores, licence verification and, in some states, a jurisprudence exam.

Exam: NPTE.

How long: days under the PT Compact; four to twelve weeks for endorsement. Fee: $100 to $400, plus a compact privilege fee where used; the current figure is on the licensing body's own site.

What to have ready before you move

  • NPTE score transfer through FSBPT
  • Licence verification
  • Jurisprudence exam if required

Start the paperwork before you give notice. Every week the licence is not done is a week you are not paid, and nothing in the process needs you to be in Vermont already.

What people get wrong

  • Assuming the compact works everywhere; both states must be members and your home licence must be in good standing
  • Not accounting for the jurisprudence exam

Who hires physical therapists in Vermont

Physical therapists in Vermont are hired by outpatient clinics, hospitals, home health, skilled nursing and travel therapy agencies. The metros with the most of that work are Burlington, South Burlington and Rutland. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Vermont openings page.

For the money side: the median physical therapist in Vermont earned $93,840 a year ($45 an hour) in May 2024 across 690 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Vermont has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 8.75%. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.

Vermont also has a program that pay people to move in: New Relocating Worker Grant (up to $7,500 for moving costs, for people who move to Vermont for a job with a Vermont employer; funded in rounds, closes when the money is gone). Each has a residence condition and a funding round.
