Physical therapist pay in Virginia after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median physical therapist in Virginia earned $100,710 a year in May 2024, which is $48 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 6,700 physical therapists the BLS counts in Virginia earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $82,560 and $117,240. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Virginia's tax, and Virginia has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 5.75%.

What the median physical therapist keeps in Virginia

For a single filer on the median $100,710, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$100,710$8,393
Federal income tax-$13,997-$1,166
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$7,704-$642
Virginia state income tax-$4,054-$338
Take-home$74,955$6,246

The state line is 4.0% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Virginia ranks for physical therapist pay

Of the 50 states, Virginia ranks 21 of 50 on the gross median for physical therapists. The highest-paying state is California at $123,300 and the lowest is North Dakota at $86,180. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Kentucky$97,500$3,900$72,850
North Carolina$96,670$4,108$72,059

Tennessee, Maryland and West Virginia leave a physical therapist with more at the end of the year than Virginia does; Tennessee by about $4,019. Kentucky and North Carolina pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the physical therapist jobs are in Virginia

The BLS count of 6,700 physical therapists is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Richmond and Arlington, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($117,240 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Virginia openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about physical therapist pay in Virginia

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Virginia is $50 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($48) is what the typical physical therapist makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $100,710 offer in Virginia is $74,955 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $79,009.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $98,710 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $103,710 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Virginia Beach pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
