Cleaner in Alaska: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Alaska does not license cleaners: no licence. This page says what a cleaner licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Alaska, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Nothing is licensed; cleaning and janitorial work in Alaska is hired on availability and record. A background check is standard for schools and hospitals.

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Alaska licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

Who hires cleaners in Alaska

Cleaners in Alaska are hired by facility services companies, hospitals, schools, hotels and property managers. The metros with the most of that work are Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Alaska openings page.

For the money side: the median cleaner in Alaska earned $39,040 a year ($19 an hour) in May 2024 across 4,900 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Alaska has no state income tax on wages. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.

Alaska also has a program that pay people to move in: Permanent Fund Dividend (roughly $1,000 to $1,700 a year, for every resident after a full calendar year in the state; not a relocation grant, but paid every year). Each has a residence condition and a funding round.
