Delivery driver in Iowa: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Iowa does not license delivery drivers: no licence beyond a standard driver's licence; a clean record and a DOT medical card for larger vehicles. This page says what a delivery driver licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Iowa, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

No special licence transfers because none is needed: a standard Iowa driver's licence, swapped within the residency window, is all a delivery job asks for. Vehicles over 10,000 pounds need a DOT medical card, which is federal and carries over.

What to have ready before you move

• Driving record
• DOT medical card if you have one

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Iowa licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Missing the licence swap window
• Assuming pay structures are the same; per-package, hourly and route-contractor pay differ widely

Who hires delivery drivers in Iowa

Delivery drivers in Iowa are hired by parcel carriers and their contractors, food distributors, retailers and courier companies. The metros with the most of that work are Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport and Iowa City. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Iowa openings page.

For the money side: the median delivery driver in Iowa earned $43,910 a year ($21 an hour) in May 2024 across 8,940 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Iowa has a flat 3.8% state income tax. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.

Iowa also has a program that pay people to move in: Newton Housing Initiative (up to $10,000 toward a newly built home, for anyone building or buying a new home in Newton; a construction incentive rather than a hiring one). Each has a residence condition and a funding round.
