Diesel mechanic in Illinois: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Illinois does not license diesel mechanics: no state licence; ASE truck certifications and manufacturer training are what employers check. This page says what a diesel mechanic licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Illinois, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

No state licenses diesel mechanics. ASE medium and heavy truck certifications are national and carry over to Illinois; DOT inspector certification (for annual inspections) is federal and also carries over. Nothing is filed with the state.

What to have ready before you move

• ASE T-series certificates
• DOT inspector qualification records
• Manufacturer training (Cummins, Detroit, PACCAR)
• Your tools

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Illinois licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Assuming shop pay scales are similar; fleet, dealer and independent shops pay very differently

Who hires diesel mechanics in Illinois

Diesel mechanics in Illinois are hired by truck dealerships, fleet maintenance operations, equipment dealers and transit agencies. The metros with the most of that work are Chicago, Aurora, Naperville, Rockford and Springfield. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Illinois openings page.

For the money side: the median diesel mechanic in Illinois earned $62,750 a year ($30 an hour) in May 2024 across 9,920 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Illinois has a flat 4.95% state income tax. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.
