H-2A vs H-2B: Which Fits Your Profile? (2026)

The two H-2 visas are siblings, but they are not twins. H-2A covers temporary agricultural work; H-2B covers temporary non-agricultural work. Which one suits you depends less on preference and more on your experience, your tolerance for different kinds of work, and how the two programs' rules play out in practice.

The core differences at a glance

Choose H-2A if...

  • You have farm or physical outdoor experience. Harvest crews value stamina and crop experience over language skills.
  • You want the highest certainty of getting a visa number. No cap means no lottery; if an employer wants you and the consulate approves you, there is no quota standing in the way.
  • You want to minimise living costs. Free housing plus provided transport means most of your gross pay is actually savable.
  • You are comfortable in rural, isolated settings for months at a time.

Choose H-2B if...

  • Your background is in services or trades: hotels, kitchens, cleaning, construction, factories.
  • You speak reasonable English and would do well in guest-facing resort roles, where tips can lift earnings.
  • You prefer towns over fields. Resort and landscaping jobs put you in communities with shops, transport and social life.
  • You can handle cap uncertainty, or you already have H-2B history, since returning workers often benefit from supplemental cap allocations.

The honest trade-offs

H-2A work is usually harder on the body and further from town, but its legal protections are stronger: guaranteed housing, the three-quarters work guarantee, and travel reimbursement are all written into the program. H-2B jobs can be more pleasant day to day, but you may pay rent, hours can fluctuate, and the cap can sink an approved job through nobody's fault. Wages overlap heavily between the programs, so do not choose based on pay rumours; compare actual job orders.

Also factor in geography and lifestyle honestly. Six months in a farm labour camp with the same forty people is a very different experience from six months in a ski town with international staff parties. Workers who choose against their temperament often quit early, and quitting early damages the returning-worker record that is the real long-term asset in this system.

Three worker profiles, three answers

The 24-year-old with farm experience and little English: H-2A, clearly. Uncapped visas, no language barrier in most field crews, free housing, and harvest experience is exactly what employers screen for. A Washington apple or Florida citrus season is a natural first step.

The 35-year-old former hotel worker with decent English: H-2B hospitality. Housekeeping supervisors, cooks and servers with real experience are in demand at resorts, and tips plus a town environment usually beat what this person would earn or enjoy in a field crew.

The construction labourer who wants maximum pay: a harder call. H-2B construction pays best but is cap-limited and scarce; a high-AEWR H-2A state like Washington or California can rival it once free housing is counted, with far better odds of actually getting a visa. Many workers in this profile start with H-2A and pursue H-2B construction once they have US history.

Can you do both?

Yes, in different seasons or years. Many workers alternate, or start in H-2A because it is uncapped and easier to enter, build a US work record, then move toward H-2B resort or landscaping roles. Time in either status counts toward the three-year maximum stay before a required period abroad, so plan contracts accordingly. For the full picture of categories beyond H-2, see US work visas explained.

Whichever program fits, the constants are the same: the employer files the paperwork, nobody legitimate charges you for a job offer, and no one can guarantee a visa. This article is general information, not legal advice; check uscis.gov and dol.gov for current rules.

Employers in both programs search for candidates by experience and availability. Create your free profile on Workmerica, describe your background honestly, and let H-2A and H-2B employers contact you directly. It is free, with no credit card required.
