Painting Jobs in the U.S. for Foreign Workers (2026)

Painting is one of the most immigrant-heavy trades in America, and for understandable reasons: the skill transfers across borders perfectly, the tools are cheap, quality shows immediately, and demand never really stops. It is also - less obviously - a trade where the seasonal visa route genuinely functions, because exterior painting in most of the country is weather-bound work.
The three painting markets
- Residential repaint - interiors and exteriors of homes; the biggest market and the easiest entry. Typical pay around $17-$25 per hour for competent brush-and-roll painters.
- Commercial / new construction - production painting of apartment blocks, offices and retail; spray-heavy, faster-paced, commonly roughly $18-$28 per hour, with union commercial painters in big cities above that.
- Industrial coatings - bridges, tanks, pipelines; the premium end, often roughly $25-$40 per hour, but requiring specialized certifications and comfort with heights, containment and respirators.
Skilled sprayers (airless and fine-finish) out-earn brush painters almost everywhere - spray skill is the fastest pay lever in this trade.
Seasonality and the visa route
In the northern half of the country, exterior painting compresses into roughly April-October. That documented seasonality means painting contractors are regular H-2B users, bringing crews in for the season at certified wages - one of the more realistic legal entries for foreign painters without U.S. history. The mechanics, caps and worker protections are in our H-2B guide. In the Sun Belt, painting is year-round, so H-2B fits less; there, the formal route is EB-3 skilled worker sponsorship for painters who can document two or more years of experience - real but slow, typically a multi-year process. Never pay a recruiter for either; legitimate employers carry the sponsorship costs the law assigns them.
Certifications that matter
- EPA Lead-Safe (RRP) certification - federally required for firms disturbing paint in pre-1978 housing; painters trained as certified renovators are more employable in the huge old-housing markets of the Northeast and Midwest.
- OSHA 10 - expected on commercial sites.
- Aerial lift and scaffold training - needed for commercial exteriors.
- SSPC/AMPP coatings certifications - the ticket into high-paying industrial work.
No state licenses painters as employees in most places, though contractors (business owners) need licences in many states - relevant if you later start your own crew, a very common immigrant path in this trade.
Where demand is strongest
Repaint demand follows housing wealth: the Northeast corridor, Chicago, Denver, Seattle and coastal California pay best. New-construction painting booms across Texas, Florida, the Carolinas, Georgia, Arizona and Tennessee. Industrial coatings work clusters around Gulf Coast refineries and aging infrastructure everywhere.
Practical advice from the trade
- Photograph your work - a phone portfolio of cut lines, cabinet finishes and spray work beats any resume claim.
- Learn U.S. product names (major American paint brands and their lines) - interviews are practical and product fluency signals experience.
- Cabinet refinishing and fine-finish spraying are the highest-margin residential niches; learn them.
How painting crews are organized and paid
Most residential painting companies run small crews of two to four under a lead painter, and understanding the pay structures helps you negotiate. Hourly is the standard for employees; piece rate (per room, per side, per square foot) appears in production repaint and new construction, rewarding speed but shifting slow-day risk to you; and some companies run performance bonuses tied to finishing jobs under budgeted hours. Ask which structure applies and what happens on rain days for exterior crews - unpaid weather days are common and should factor into your math. Independent-contractor misclassification is a known problem in this trade: if a company controls your hours and provides materials but pays you as a contractor with no tax withholding, understand what that means for your taxes and protections. Legitimate employers explain their structure clearly; evasive answers about pay are themselves an answer.
One more habit worth building early: track your own hours and square footage daily in a notebook or phone app. It protects you in pay disputes, shows you which job types earn you the most, and gives you real numbers when negotiating your next rate.
