How to transfer your Real estate agent licence to Massachusetts (2026)

Real estate agent work in Massachusetts is licensed at state level, by the Massachusetts real estate commission. This page says what a real estate agent licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Massachusetts, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Real estate licences do not transfer: every state requires at least its own law portion of the exam, and most require the full pre-licensing course unless they have a reciprocity agreement with your state. Massachusetts's commission publishes which states it reciprocates with; even then you take the Massachusetts law exam and affiliate with a Massachusetts broker.

Exam: the state portion of the licensing exam, always required.

How long: four to twelve weeks including the exam. Fee: $100 to $400 plus course and exam fees; the current figure is on the licensing body's own site.

What to have ready before you move

• Licence history certification from your commission
• Course completion certificates
• Fingerprints

Start the paperwork before you give notice. Every week the licence is not done is a week you are not paid, and nothing in the process needs you to be in Massachusetts already.

What people get wrong

• Assuming reciprocity means no exam; it means no course
• Leaving the old licence active with no broker; park it or let it go properly

Who hires real estate agents in Massachusetts

Real estate agents in Massachusetts are hired by brokerages; agents are independent contractors. The metros with the most of that work are Boston, Worcester, Springfield and Cambridge. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Massachusetts openings page.
