Sales in Minnesota: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Minnesota does not license sales professionals: no licence for most sales; insurance, securities and real estate are licensed separately. This page says what a sales professional licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Minnesota, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

General sales roles are not licensed. Licensed sales (insurance, securities, real estate) follow their own rules. Nothing to file in Minnesota for a territory or account role.

What to have ready before you move

• A record of quota attainment
• References

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Minnesota licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Accepting a territory before checking the base and the commission plan in writing

For the money side: the median sales professional in Minnesota earned $75,060 a year ($36 an hour) in May 2024 across 32,010 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Minnesota has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 9.85%. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.

Minnesota also has a program that pay people to move in: Harmony new-home rebate ($5,000 to $12,000, for anyone building a new home in the city of Harmony). Each has a residence condition and a funding round.
