Working in Utah as a Foreign Worker: Jobs, Pay and Cost of Living (2026)

Utah has run one of America's hottest labor markets for years - unemployment is persistently among the nation's lowest - and its twin tourism seasons give it something unusual: strong seasonal hiring in both winter and summer. For foreign workers, that means two distinct H-2B windows a year.

Where the jobs are

  • Ski resorts. Park City, Deer Valley, Snowbird, Alta and a dozen other resorts staff up every November for lift operations, housekeeping, food service and rental shops. Resorts in mountain towns cannot house enough local workers, so several use the H-2B program for the December-April season.
  • Summer tourism. Utah's "Mighty Five" national parks (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches and more) drive a second seasonal economy - hotels, outfitters and restaurants in gateway towns like Springdale and Moab hire from spring to autumn.
  • Construction. The Wasatch Front from Provo to Ogden has grown explosively; framing, concrete and finishing crews are chronically short-handed.
  • Warehousing and light manufacturing. Salt Lake City's position on the I-15/I-80 crossroads has attracted large distribution centers, hiring year-round.

Pay

Hedged 2026 figures: ski-resort hourly roles typically pay around $15-$19 (often with perks like ski passes and discounted staff housing), construction laborers roughly $18-$25, warehouse workers around $16-$20. H-2B positions pay the official wage stated in the job order - always the number to trust. In mountain towns, whether the employer provides affordable housing matters more than a dollar or two of wage difference, so ask about housing first.

Cost of living: the housing catch

Utah's overall costs are moderate, but housing along the Wasatch Front has risen sharply - Salt Lake City one-bedrooms often run roughly $1,100-$1,500. Park City itself is a luxury market where seasonal workers rely almost entirely on employer or shared housing; do not sign a Park City job without a housing plan. Ogden, Provo's outskirts and smaller towns remain cheaper. Everyday costs (food, fuel) sit near the national average.

Climate: built for two seasons

Utah's mountains get famously light, abundant snow - the ski industry's whole premise - so winter work means real cold and snowy commutes at altitude. The valleys and southern red-rock country are high desert: hot, dry summers (St. George and Moab can exceed 38°C) and four proper seasons along the Wasatch Front. Summer outdoor workers need sun and heat discipline; winter workers need genuine cold-weather gear.

Visas, briefly

Both the winter resort season and the summer park season hire through the H-2B program, employer-petitioned and never worker-paid - our H-2B guide explains the calendar and caps, and US work visas explained covers the wider picture. Some workers string together a winter season in Utah and a summer season elsewhere; the visa timing makes this possible but never guaranteed. Anyone promising guaranteed visas or charging you for a job offer is running a scam.

Stacking seasons and settling along the Wasatch Front

Utah's rare gift is that its two tourist seasons interlock. A winter lift operator or resort housekeeper finishing in April can move to a Moab or Springdale hotel job for the summer, or pick up construction work in the valley, and be back on the mountain by Thanksgiving. Employers know this rhythm and many rehire the same seasonal staff year after year - returning workers often get better housing picks and small wage bumps, so treat your first season as an audition for the next three. If you are aiming at ski resorts, apply in late summer; hiring fairs run September-October and staff housing lotteries fill early.

For year-round settlers, Ogden is the underrated choice: 40 minutes from Salt Lake City, close to Snowbasin and Powder Mountain, with rents meaningfully below the capital and a growing industrial base. Provo-Orem suits families - Utah has the youngest population in America and is unusually family-oriented, safe and orderly, though nightlife is famously quiet and alcohol laws are stricter than elsewhere. Salt Lake City itself is the most international corner of the state, with established Latino, Pacific Islander and refugee communities. Wherever you base yourself, winter tires are mandatory equipment for mountain commutes, not a polite suggestion.
