How to transfer your Corrections officer licence to Mississippi (2026)

Corrections officer work in Mississippi is licensed at state level, by the Mississippi department of corrections or its training academy. This page says what a corrections officer licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Mississippi, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Corrections certification is by state or by agency and rarely transfers in full: Mississippi will usually credit your experience in hiring but still run you through its academy. Federal Bureau of Prisons certification transfers within the federal system.

How long: the academy is four to twelve weeks. Fee: paid by the agency; the current figure is on the licensing body's own site.

What to have ready before you move

• Training records
• Separation documentation
• Firearms qualification if applicable

Start the paperwork before you give notice. Every week the licence is not done is a week you are not paid, and nothing in the process needs you to be in Mississippi already.

What people get wrong

• Assuming experience shortens the academy; most states require the full program
