Dispatcher in Wisconsin: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Wisconsin does not license dispatchers: no licence for freight dispatchers; public safety dispatchers are certified by the state. This page says what a dispatcher licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Wisconsin, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Freight and fleet dispatchers are not licensed. Public safety (911) dispatchers are certified by the state or the agency, with a training academy and a background check, and that certification rarely transfers: expect to complete Wisconsin's program on hire.

What to have ready before you move

• TMS or CAD system experience listed
• Public safety: your state certification and training record

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Wisconsin licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Assuming a 911 certification transfers; most states retrain

Who hires dispatchers in Wisconsin

Dispatchers in Wisconsin are hired by carriers, brokers, towing and service fleets, and public safety agencies. The metros with the most of that work are Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay and Kenosha. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Wisconsin openings page.

For the money side: the median dispatcher in Wisconsin earned $49,770 a year ($24 an hour) in May 2024 across 3,350 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Wisconsin has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 7.65%. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.
