How to transfer your Firefighter licence to Pennsylvania (2026)

Firefighter work in Pennsylvania is licensed at state level, by the Pennsylvania fire standards or firefighter certification board. This page says what a firefighter licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Pennsylvania, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Firefighter certification is state-issued but nearly every state accepts IFSAC or Pro Board accredited certificates for reciprocity, so a Firefighter I/II and HazMat Ops certificate from an accredited program transfers to Pennsylvania on application. EMT or paramedic certification transfers through NREMT. The hiring department runs its own academy on top.

Exam: IFSAC or Pro Board certification, accepted across states.

How long: two to eight weeks for certification reciprocity. Fee: $25 to $100; the current figure is on the licensing body's own site.

What to have ready before you move

• IFSAC or Pro Board certificates
• NREMT card
• Training records

Start the paperwork before you give notice. Every week the licence is not done is a week you are not paid, and nothing in the process needs you to be in Pennsylvania already.

What people get wrong

• Holding a state certificate that is not IFSAC or Pro Board accredited; it may not transfer
• Underestimating the hiring timeline; departments hire in cycles
