Heavy equipment operator in Arizona: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Arizona does not license heavy equipment operators: no state licence for equipment operators; crane operators need NCCCO certification and a state licence in some states. This page says what a heavy equipment operator licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Arizona, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

No state licenses excavator, dozer or loader operators. Crane operation is the exception: NCCCO certification is required federally on construction sites, and about twenty states and several cities add a state crane operator licence. Apply to Arizona's licensing program if it has one, with your NCCCO card and the fee.

What to have ready before you move

• NCCCO card and the types it covers
• Union card if applicable
• CDL if you move equipment

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Arizona licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Assuming NCCCO alone is enough in a state that licenses crane operators
• Letting NCCCO lapse; recertification is an exam

Who hires heavy equipment operators in Arizona

Heavy equipment operators in Arizona are hired by civil contractors, crane rental companies, mines, ports and union locals. The metros with the most of that work are Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa and Scottsdale. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Arizona openings page.

For the money side: the median heavy equipment operator in Arizona earned $59,900 a year ($29 an hour) in May 2024 across 13,520 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Arizona has a flat 2.5% state income tax. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.
