Ironworker in Missouri: licence, certification and what employers require (2026)

Missouri does not license ironworkers: no state licence; union apprenticeship and certifications (welding, rigging, NCCCO signal person) are what employers check. This page says what a ironworker licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Missouri, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

No state licenses ironworkers. Union members transfer between locals through the international's travel card system; non-union ironworkers transfer their certifications and their record. Structural welding on public work may require AWS certification.

What to have ready before you move

• Union card and travel letter if union
• AWS welding certifications
• Rigging and signal person certificates
• OSHA 30 card

Start the paperwork before you give notice. There is no Missouri licence to wait for, so the only clock is the employer's.

What people get wrong

• Arriving in a union-heavy region without a travel letter
• Letting a welding certification lapse
