Medical coder pay in Oklahoma after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median medical coder in Oklahoma earned $48,590 a year in May 2024, which is $23 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 1,910 medical coders the BLS counts in Oklahoma earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $38,830 and $59,430. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Oklahoma's tax, and Oklahoma has a progressive state income tax with a top rate of 4.75%.

What the median medical coder keeps in Oklahoma

For a single filer on the median $48,590, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$48,590$4,049
Federal income tax-$3,847-$321
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$3,717-$310
Oklahoma state income tax-$1,616-$135
Take-home$39,410$3,284

The state line is 3.3% of gross at this salary, approximated at 70% of the top bracket, which is where a middle income lands in most progressive states. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Oklahoma ranks for medical coder pay

Of the 50 states, Oklahoma ranks 35 of 50 on the gross median for medical coders. The highest-paying state is Rhode Island at $63,330 and the lowest is Alabama at $38,540. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

Kansas$48,670$1,901$39,190
Arkansas$39,920$1,090$32,970

Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Missouri leave a medical coder with more at the end of the year than Oklahoma does; Colorado by about $4,658. Kansas and Arkansas pay less once tax is counted. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the medical coder jobs are in Oklahoma

The BLS count of 1,910 medical coders is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Norman and Broken Arrow, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($59,430 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Oklahoma openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

Oklahoma also has a program that pay people to move in: Tulsa Remote ($10,000, for full-time remote workers who move to Tulsa for at least a year; the longest-running program of its kind). Each has a residence condition and a funding round; the amount is the program's own "up to" figure.

What people get wrong about medical coder pay in Oklahoma

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Oklahoma is $25 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($23) is what the typical medical coder makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $48,590 offer in Oklahoma is $39,410 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $41,026.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $46,590 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $51,590 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Oklahoma City pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
