How to transfer your Nail technician licence to Iowa (2026)

Nail technician work in Iowa is licensed at state level, by the Iowa Board of Cosmetology. This page says what a nail technician licensed or working in another state has to do to work in Iowa, in the order to do it, and what goes wrong when the order is reversed.

How the transfer works

Every state except Connecticut licenses nail technicians, with hours from about 100 to 600. Reciprocity to Iowa depends on your hours meeting its minimum and a clean record; the law and rules exam is usually required.

Exam: NIC nail technology exams in most states.

How long: two to six weeks. Fee: $25 to $150; the current figure is on the licensing body's own site.

What to have ready before you move

• Licence verification
• Hours transcript

Start the paperwork before you give notice. Every week the licence is not done is a week you are not paid, and nothing in the process needs you to be in Iowa already.

What people get wrong

• Falling short on hours; the gap can be made up with experience in some states

Who hires nail technicians in Iowa

Nail technicians in Iowa are hired by nail salons, spas and booth rental. The metros with the most of that work are Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport and Iowa City. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are on the Iowa openings page.

For the money side: the median nail technician in Iowa earned $38,530 a year ($19 an hour) in May 2024 across 120 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Iowa has a flat 3.8% state income tax. What that leaves you after tax is its own page.

Iowa also has a program that pay people to move in: Newton Housing Initiative (up to $10,000 toward a newly built home, for anyone building or buying a new home in Newton; a construction incentive rather than a hiring one). Each has a residence condition and a funding round.
