Painter pay in Utah after taxes: what you keep (2026)

The median painter in Utah earned $45,900 a year in May 2024, which is $22 an hour for a full-time year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Half of the 3,350 painters the BLS counts in Utah earned more than that and half earned less; the middle half of them sat between $37,480 and $49,540. That is the gross figure, before anyone takes anything. What you keep depends on Utah's tax, and Utah has a flat 4.5% state income tax.

What the median painter keeps in Utah

For a single filer on the median $45,900, taking the standard deduction and no other adjustments:

LineA yearA month
Gross pay (BLS median)$45,900$3,825
Federal income tax-$3,524-$294
Social Security and Medicare (7.65%)-$3,511-$293
Utah state income tax-$2,066-$172
Take-home$36,799$3,067

The state line is 4.5% of gross at this salary. Health insurance, retirement contributions and local taxes are not in it either; they vary by employer and by city.

Where Utah ranks for painter pay

Of the 50 states, Utah ranks 35 of 50 on the gross median for painters. The highest-paying state is Hawaii at $67,620 and the lowest is Arkansas at $38,420. Gross rank is not take-home rank: a state with no income tax climbs several places once the state line is applied, and a high-tax state drops.

The same job in the states next to Utah, gross median and estimated take-home for a single filer:

StateGross medianState taxTake-home
Utah$45,900$2,066$36,799
Nevada$52,300$0$44,007
Colorado$50,650$2,229$40,452
Wyoming$45,820$0$38,801
Arizona$47,290$1,182$38,799
New Mexico$45,910$1,896$36,977
Idaho$46,490$2,464$36,875

Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico and Idaho leave a painter with more at the end of the year than Utah does; Nevada by about $7,208. Pay is one line; rent is the other, and a higher median in a metro with higher rent can leave you with less.

Where the painter jobs are in Utah

The BLS count of 3,350 painters is statewide. The metros with the most of that work are Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Provo and St. George, which is where the median is set and where the upper quartile ($49,540 and above) is most often paid. Employers who could not hire locally and have filed with the Department of Labor are listed on the Utah openings page; those filings are the ones already paying to bring people in, and housing or transport is often part of the offer.

What people get wrong about painter pay in Utah

  • Quoting the mean. The BLS mean for Utah is $22 an hour, pulled up by the top earners. The median ($22) is what the typical painter makes.
  • Comparing gross across states. A $45,900 offer in Utah is $36,799 in hand; the same number in a no-tax state is $38,865.
  • Forgetting the employer's share of insurance. A job that pays $43,900 with full health coverage can beat one that pays $48,900 without it.
  • Treating the statewide median as the metro median. Salt Lake City pays differently from a rural county; ask for the figure for the place you are actually going.
